We are currently using Oracle but our Management came up with the idea of moving to Enterprise DB.What are the advantage of Oracle over Enterprise DB?

What feature does Oracle DB have & that your organization REQUIRES that Enterprise DB not have?

This is because of Oracle licensing cost involved and this is the reason for change. What is the advantage of spending huge amount on Oracle ?

I still hope to find a proper response from some expert here.Yes we had no option before so we got Oracle but now when there is an option which saves money then the question is why to go for Oracle?

Why do you say you had no option previously? What changed?

"Because it is the Leader" is only a Marketing term and not technical.I cannot tell my Management to spend $100000 on Oracle only because its the Leader Laughing
When i said we had no option i mean there was no other database which provide Active Clustering and something which is Enterprise ready for production but now EnterpriseDB claims it has all features as oracle then why should someone pay such a huge amount for Oracle licensing?

It was a joke, I could say because it is the one that the most options and features.
I don't think that Postgres has all SQL functions Oracle has.
I don't think Postgres allows rolling application upgrade.

Thanks for the reply Michael.
The 2 points which you mentioned are supported also by EnterpriseDB

How about support when your database crashes and you lose access/control over your valuable data?
I don't know nothing about Postgres' support options, but I do know Oracle's are quite good with respect to that.

It is said in the document you pointed:
Quote:
Postgres Plus supports the following SQL-callable functions and variables which are popular with Oracle developers and DBAs:

Then a list of 32 fucntions, Oracle SQL contains 250 functions (yes I count them in SQL Reference manual).
Does Postgres supports XML queries?
Does it support recursive and hierarchival queries?
...

Quote:
EnterpriseDB supports the most used packages that are built into the Oracle database.

That is many of them are not supported and so have to be rewritten (if it is possible, can you write a package to send a mail? can you write a package that allows you to synchronize different sessions?...).

Everywhere in the document it is said "EnterpriseDB supports the most commonly used XXX" which means many of them are not supported. Now it depends if you use them or not, if you use them you are in some trouble.

I don't see anything about application rolling upgrade which is for me the top 1 Oracle 11.2 new feature.

Michel
