Hi All,

I was going through the practice questions of exam 1z0-042.
I got following question and options of that question.

Quote:
Which two steps are performed the first time any UPDATE statement is issued after the instance is started?

A. Creating the parse tree of the statement
B. Writing the modified data blocks to the data files
C. Writing the modified data to the archived redo log files
D. Updating the control file to indicate the most recent checkpoint
E. Updating the data file header to indicate the most recent checkpoint
F. Reading the blocks to database buffer cache if they are not already there

As per my knowledge, answer is A & F.
But it was mentioned that correct answer is C & D.

Can anyone please tell me what is the correct answer?

regards,
Delna

It's probably in the concepts book (sorry, I've gone through so much reading I lose track of what is held where).

There's no way it's C and D.
C happens for every update, regardless of how many times its been run

Doesn't C only happen for committed updates?

I thought logs were only archived when no longer in use. I may be mistaken.

Possibly, I should check really, but regardless, it's still not related to the first time an update is run after restart.

Both committed updates and uncommitted changes will (eventually) be in the archive logfiles. The way I think if it is that Oracle doesn't really do rollback at all. The ROLLBACK command generates another set of DML statements that reverse the effect of the first set, and then commits the whole lot as one transaction. So C applies to both committed and uncommitted changes (though it is still wrong, of course.

Cheers.

It has been a little while before I looked at the archive log mechanics in 'anger', I assumed I'd forgotten something.

Bit of a hijack Wink
