In case anyone is interested, it is now possible to go from OCA 9i/10g/11g to OCP 12c with one exam. It's in beta (and so very cheap) until the end of the month, http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-067
I did it today (research for a book.) Be warned: it is a pretty tough exam, 175 questions in three and a half hours. But if you never finished OCP in an earlier release, it is probably your best option. Specially while it is in beta.

The beta end dates for both have been pushed to October 25th according to an OU official, although the website has not yet been updated. I researched both exams -- although I have not taken the beta. The broad range of topics will make them challenging. I have created a page for each on my website with some study material, though:

Hi John

as an 11g OCA for me 1Z0-067 sounds very interesting. Will you release an Oracle Press book about 1Z0-067 - Upgrade Oracle9i/10g/11g OCA to Oracle Database 12c OCP?

Is it not easier to make OCP 12c with two exams (SQL exam from 11g still valid)?

One thing that I would point out is that the 1Z0-067 exam provides the greatest benefit for 9i OCAs, somewhat less for 10g OCAs and the least for 11g OCAs. 067 is a compilation of topics from about eight different exams (1Z0-040, 1Z0-043, 1Z0-050, 1Z0-052, 1Z0-053, 1Z0-060, 1Z0-062, 1Z0-063). While it means you can jump from an 11g OCA to a 12c OCP in one test, that one test was designed to ensure that 9i OCAs were caught up on all of the new features that were introduced in 10g, 11g, and 12c.

I've been asked to write a guest post for the Oracle Certification Blog about the pros and cons of the 1Z0-034 and 1Z0-067 exams. I haven't written it yet, but it's on my short list of projects to do. When it is published, I'll link to it from here.

I wouldn't think that any mainstream publisher will produce anything aimed specifically at this exam. The objectives are all covered in the various exam guides for the SQL/OCA/OCP core curricula for each release, and the new features exam guides.

Just book it, do some studying, and have a go. In beta it is very cheap, and an enjoyable way to spend a morning. And you never know - you might pass.

I had pretty much assumed (before John's note about 'research for a book') that Oracle Press would not be creating anything for this exam. The number of topics means an OP-style book for it would be huge. I had my study guide for the exam about 80% complete before I had to table it temporarily for other projects on my 'To-Do' list. The final guide will easily be twice the size of my average in the series. My guides normally run about 160-180 pages. 1Z0-034 was 255 pages. 1Z0-067 will be in the low-to-mid 300's.

A guide for 1Z0-067 would ultimately turn into a book, as Matthew said somewhere around 300+ pages as it needs to cover too many topics. Most of the test takers who want a guide to quickly study on required topics, usually look for something more precise, but 300+ pages would be a big task, for the author as well as the reader Smile

Just to be clear -- I'll still finish the 067 guide... oversized or not. However, the problem is even worse when you start looking at books with the level of detail that you get in Oracle Press guides. My 1Z0-052 guide for example is 158 pages. John's Oracle Press book for that exam is 733 pages.

If you assume my 067 guide will run to 325 pages and extrapolate a similar ratio, an equivalent Oracle Press book would be about 1500 pages. That's a big book.

I understand.

My point is, a study guide intended specially for a specific test paper is much different from a book focussed on a complete reference. That's what the test takers look for. Having said that, it is very difficult, rather next to impossible, to compare two books of two different authors on the same subject/topic.

By the way, to comment on 1Z0-067, an amateur would find it too difficult to pass in beta level. So, it should be OK to keep the exam guide a bit precise and not going too much into details. Would you agree?

100% agree. Did several beta exams. Never passed. Even Linux, where I am much more strong than RDBMS.

My guide for this exam is sitting at about 85% complete. At this point, I am unlikely to finish it before the production exam is released. I have put writing guides on hold for a bit while I am working on another project. I hope to have that project complete sometime in December at which point I will be working on finishing up several guides that are currently at varying stages of completion.

Once the guide is complete, it will be available on Amazon.

Matthew thank you for the update. Could you please suggest any other material/websites to start my studies for this beta exam which is closing in December 2014. I did my 9i OCA long time ago (2007). Now this upgraded exam sees to be a great opportunity for me.

Everything I have to date is on the 1Z0-067 page on my website. I normally add to these pages as I'm writing the guides and locate new material. Since the book isn't complete, the page isn't either, but it's what I have right now.
